• iweek 2010

The posts in category iweek Liepaja will give an impression of my /our participation of the visit and seminar we attended in Latvia between the 24th and 28th of November. For me this was the second visit (last year I visited the opening op the media department of Liepaja University). The amount of work done during last year is amazing. The schools facilities are well organised, the curriculum of BA and Master program is well developed and the Phd program is being set up right now.
First of all a big thank you to all the participants and their contribution to the discussions about systems and ideas for arts education. And even more a warm thank you to Santa Mazika, Anna Trapenciere and the MPlab staff from Liepaja University, who organised this week.

For us the week started on wednesday where we – after a long journey- arrived in the Fontaine Royale. This hotel is some kind of eclectic Oase in town. Very much like hotel Bazaar in Rotterdam (for those of you who know the place), but more raw and pure.
Thursday morning we went on a tour through the town of Liepaja and ende up in Karosta, an old russian army complex. In the middle of this area stands a beautiful Russian Cathedral, around it are a lot of housing projects located. Some abandoned, some inhabited. The combination of the cathedral, the housing blocks and the -often abandoned- Russian army facilities gave the area a strange intriguing atmosphere. The area is beautifully located in a forest near the sea side.
It was a very inspiring tour, and ideas for doing something with Karosta in a artistic context where many.

More photo’s of the tour can be seen on Cai’s TAMK blog (since i carried only a shitty iphone for making photo’s and his photos are better).
The afternoon of the first day was full with interesting presentations (some of which I documented in the post: University Presentation.
The evening was full with Sauna and ‘grande diner’. There was second of confusion when someone asked one of the other visitors in the sauna ‘do you want me to beat you?’ but the guy meant actually a friendly beating with the birch twigs. It was a very nice evening program and I was even lucky enough to receive a twinkling massage from a really good masseuse (paldies masiere !).
